OBJECTIVES:
This assignment enables you to think about the challenges related to disaster management activities using a real-world case. This assignment will also lay the foundation for the material covered in Part II of our class.
FILE FORMAT:
The assignment must be submitted as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file. If you are using a Apple (Mac) computer, save the file as a .pdf.
INSTRUCTIONS:
(1) Step One:
Read the two chapter excepts (Lindell et al 2007 and Sylves 2015) posted above, which introduce you to the four stages in the Disaster Cycle: 1) mitigation; 2) prevention; 3) response; and 4) recovery.
(2) Step Two:
Watch then two documentaries posted for Unit 05. Hint: Before you start, review the questions written under Step Three. This will give you an idea of what you should be looking for as you watch the documentaries.
(3) Step Three:
Using what you learned from the chapter excerpts and the documentaries, identify and describe what you believe were the biggest challenges (problems) encountered during and after Hurricane Katrina. Think broadly. There is no need for you to do research outside of the materials provided for you. In your response, organize the challenges that you identified into the following three categories: 1) mitigation challenges; 2) prevention challenges; and 3) response challenges. Your answer need not be in essay form. You may simply use bullet points. There is no page limit, as I expect you to use your personal judgment to determine when you have sufficiently answered the question. Hint: as a guide, a one-page submission will not capture the full range of challenges, and a five-page submission will likely be full of duplications and extraneous words, thoughts, and ideas. I have provided you with an example of how you can organize your submission. For those of you who use MS Word, you can use the .docx file as a template. If you are not able to open .doc files, you can use the .txt file as a template. Remember: save your document, from time-to-time, so you do not lose all your hard work.
