In this essay, we will be exploring sources of exposure to different environmental concerns and chemical contaminants, as well as discussing the strategies to minimize or eliminate exposure. Furthermore, we will also be discussing one of Virginia’s Superfund sites, including the community involvement in its discovery and cleanup, and the current stage of cleanup.

Question #1:

To start, we visited the website https://toxtown.nlm.nih.gov/sources-of-exposure and explored the sources of exposure section. We chose air pollution as our source of exposure, and we clicked on the interactive reference to explore more about the topic. The location we chose was Los Angeles, California, due to its severe air pollution levels.

The environmental concerns and chemical contaminants found in the area included lead, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and particulate matter. These contaminants can cause respiratory problems, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attack and stroke. The source of these chemicals comes from vehicles, factories, and wildfires.

Strategies to minimize or eliminate exposure include using public transportation, using energy-efficient appliances, and planting trees and shrubs around the home. Additionally, people should avoid outdoor activities during times when the air quality is low.

Moving on to Virginia’s Superfund sites, we visited the website https://www.epa.gov/superfund/search-superfund-sites-where-you-live and chose one of the sites, the Fairfax St. Wood Treating Plant site. The site is a former wood-treating facility that operated from 1960 to 1985, leaving the site with soil and groundwater contamination from chemicals used in the wood-treating process.

The discovery of the site was due to the site’s proximity to a residential area, and the community was involved in the investigation of the site. In the early 1990s, the EPA removed the contaminated soil and stored it in a temporary storage facility. The cleanup of the site is still ongoing, and remediation strategies include the treatment of contaminated groundwater and the monitoring of surrounding wells.
