The usual TV recap, a form of popular cultural journalism that has taken off on websites
ranging from The AV Club to New York Magazine’s Vulture to legacy publications like The New York
Times, tracks the significant actions of characters as they move through the world of a particular show.
In other words, TV recappers attempt to assess the major themes of the show they are writing about
through analyzing major and minor plot points that contribute to the overall arc of a program.
Instead of
following such conventions, this assignment asks you to trace the forms and functions of key spaces in
an assigned episode of CBS/Paramount+’s spinoff series The Good Fight. After watching S02E07, “Day
450,” and taking notes and screencaps of its key spatial elements, you will analytically summarize how
you can trace the major themes and plot points of the episode through an analysis of the sets and
locations used in the episode.
While recaps of The Good Fight are freely available online, I encourage
you to not consult them and instead write from your own POV. The three recaps and one op-ed piece
about The Last of Us should give you an idea of the different tones you may take in your analysis—be
creative and freewheeling in how you address this assignment.
