HOW TO WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT (EXAMPLE SEEAY / DRAFT)
Final Journal
Explaining Excitement and Concerns
Throughout my pediatric clinical experience, I was both excited and concerned. On one hand, I was thrilled to be able to apply my theoretical knowledge to real-life situations and gain hands-on experience in the field. I was also impressed by the dedication and compassion of the healthcare providers I worked with, who went above and beyond to ensure the best care for their patients.
On the other hand, I was concerned about the complexity of the cases I encountered, as well as the challenges that arose in the delivery of care. I also struggled with balancing the needs of the child and their family, and ensuring that their cultural background and beliefs were considered in the care plan.
Changing Personal Definition of Family and Family Roles
My personal definition of family and family roles has changed to some extent during my clinical experience. I previously believed that the family was defined as the immediate biological relatives of a child, but I now understand that family can also include extended family members, foster parents, and other significant individuals who play a role in the child’s life.
I have also come to appreciate the diversity in family roles and the importance of considering each individual’s unique contributions and perspectives when assessing a child and their family. This has influenced my assessment of children and their families, as I now make a conscious effort to consider the entire family system and the role each member plays in the child’s development and wellbeing.
Understanding Culture
My understanding of culture, both the culture of the provider and that of the child and their family, has expanded greatly during my clinical experience. I have learned about the importance of cultural humility and the need to approach each patient with an open mind and a willingness to learn about their beliefs and values.
This has influenced my assessments, as I now make a conscious effort to gather information about the child and their family’s cultural background and incorporate this information into the care plan. I have also become more aware of my own cultural biases and how they may affect the care I provide.
Accomplishing Goals and Objectives
I believe I have done well in accomplishing the goals and objectives I developed in Week 1 for my practicum experience. I have gained hands-on experience in the delivery of pediatric care, and I have had the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population.
Refining Goals and Developing New Ones
Based on my practicum experience, I have refined my existing goals and developed new ones for my continued education and professional practice. I now have a deeper understanding of the importance of considering cultural differences in the care of children and their families, and I aim to continue learning about different cultures and incorporating this knowledge into my practice.
I also recognize the need for ongoing professional development, and I plan to stay current with the latest advances in pediatric care by attending conferences and participating in continuing education opportunities. I also plan to consider the NAPNAP Position Statement on Age Parameters for Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Practice in my future practice, as I believe it is important to maintain the highest standards of care for pediatric patients.
