Students will demonstrate their ability to evaluate eight secondary sources.
Students will demonstrate their ability to use good grammar and syntax.
Assignment
This assignment prepares you for your final research assignment which will require you to develop an argument using four secondary sources. While I am not requiring you to write on the topic that you choose for your annotated bibliography, I highly recommend using your annotated biography in this way.
In class I will provide sample MLA annotated bibliographies. We will go over the samples together and any questions that you may have. Purdue Owl is a fabulous website to visit if you a question about citing in MLA. If you have any questions about your annotated bibliography, please make an appointment with me.
An annotated bibliography usually consists of three parts: the citation, the summary paragraph, and the evaluative paragraph. Some annotated bibliographies only consist of the citation and the summary, but to help you along in your research, you will be required to evaluate each source that you summarize in a paragraph that is five to seven sentences in length.
Your summary paragraph needs to be five to seven sentences long. Use these guidelines to help you summarize your sources
To summarize a short passage, read it carefully and, without looking at the text, write a one-or two sentence summary.
To summarize a long passage or an entire chapter, skim the headings and topic sentences, making notes.
For a whole book, you may want to refer to the preface and introduction.
Use your own words. If you do include any language from the original, enclose it in quotation marks.
Use these guidelines to help you write your evaluative paragraph.
What will this source add to your research project? Does it help you support a major point, demonstrate that you have thoroughly researched your topic, or help establish your own credibility through its authority?
How closely related is the source to the narrowed topic you are pursuing? You may need to read beyond the title and opening paragraph to check for relevance.
What can you learn about the publisher or sponsor of the source you are using? Is the source scholarly? Is the source from a credible news source?
Identify the source’s point of view or rhetorical stance and scrutinize it carefully. Does the source present facts, or does it interpret or evaluate them? What does the author want?
Grading
I am looking for annotated bibliographies that contain coherent summaries and thoughtful evaluations. Each summary and evaluative paragraph must be at least five sentences long.
An annotated bibliography that does not include all eight sources will not receive a passing grade.
Your annotated bibliography must be formatted in MLA.
See rubric for a detailed description of your grade.
