MUST HAVE MARVIN PERRY SOURCES OF WESTERN TRADITION
To complete this assignment, write an essay explaining why historians have debated the causes
and meaning of the revolution, by providing evidence for each of these major interpretations,
basing your work on the documents included in Sources of the Western Tradition. Present your
work in a formal paper, roughly 1800 words long, double-spaced in Times New Roman 12-point
font. This assignment is designed to assist you in developing skill in working with primary
sources, in building arguments based on historical evidence, and in articulating those arguments
in writing.
Begin by revisiting the texts provided by Perry related to the French Revolution, pages 94-118.
As you reconsider these texts, look for evidence which in your view seems to correspond to the
major interpretations described above. Based on your reading of these documents, consider the
questions: Why does the debate over the causes and meaning of the French Revolution exist?
Why are historians unsure about which interpretation is most convincing?
Your answer to these questions will constitute the heart of your thesis, and your paper should
seek to prove this thesis, using evidence drawn from documents included in Sources of the
Western Tradition. You may use the main course textbook, but do not need and should not utilize
any source outside class readings. Write for someone familiar with the revolution but not
necessarily knowledgeable about this particular debate or these particular authors or documents.
That is, make sure to introduce the essay and the debate over the revolution – including
explaining the competing interpretations of its meaning; to provide context when you use
evidence to explain and illustrate each interpretation; and to include a proper conclusion.
Ultimately, your aim is to write a paper which explains the debate over the meaning of the
French Revolution. Be concerned with both content and style in writing the essay. Included in
this must be full citations for any quoted or paraphrased material, according to accepted practice
in History (i.e., footnotes only). Finally, see guidance on the construction of the essay, provided
on the reverse.
