HOW TO WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT (EXAMPLE ESSAY / DRAFT)
Introduction Bell hooks, a professor and social activist, is well known for her thoughts on feminism and popular culture. In her video, “Cultural Criticism & Transformation,” hooks addresses several complex subjects related to race, ethnicity, sexual morality, and gender in popular culture. Through the use of visual examples from movies, she argues that mass media often promotes inequality and reinforces the viewpoints of white, male, corporate culture, rather than promoting images of equality and allowing for the authentic expression of racial, ethnic, and sexual identity. In this note, I will analyze hooks’ views on these subjects, and present my own opinion, supported by research, on whether mass media promotes images of equality or reinforces inequality.
Do You Agree or Disagree with Hooks’ Views? I agree with hooks’ views on the role of mass media in shaping our understanding of race, ethnicity, sexual morality, and gender. Research supports the idea that the media often perpetuates negative stereotypes and reinforces societal inequalities (Entman & Rojecki, 2000). For example, women are often portrayed in stereotypical and objectifying roles, while people of color are frequently depicted in a negative light, perpetuating harmful biases and stereotypes (Perry & Finnerty, 2018). Additionally, the media is dominated by the perspectives of white, male, corporate culture, further perpetuating these harmful norms (Berger, 2018).
Does Mass Media Promote Images of Equality or Inequality? Hooks argues that mass media promotes inequality through the exclusion and exaggeration of differences between races, ethnicities, and genders. This is supported by research, which has shown that the media often perpetuates harmful stereotypes and reinforces systemic inequalities (Entman & Rojecki, 2000). For example, people of color are often depicted as criminal or dangerous, while women are often objectified and sexualized (Perry & Finnerty, 2018). These negative depictions contribute to the reinforcement of harmful biases and stereotypes and serve to maintain existing power structures and inequalities.
Does Mass Media Reinforce the Viewpoints of White, Male, Corporate Culture or Allow for Authentic Expression of Identity? Hooks argues that mass media reinforces the viewpoints of white, male, corporate culture, rather than allowing for the authentic expression of racial, ethnic, and sexual identity. This is also supported by research, which has shown that the media is dominated by the perspectives of white, male, corporate culture (Berger, 2018). For example, the portrayal of women in media often reinforces harmful stereotypes and objectifies their bodies, while the depiction of people of color is often limited and reinforces negative stereotypes (Perry & Finnerty, 2018). The dominant perspective in media reinforces existing power structures and reinforces the status quo, rather than promoting diversity and allowing for the authentic expression of identity.
Conclusion In conclusion, I agree with hooks’ views on the role of mass media in shaping our understanding of race, ethnicity, sexual morality, and gender. Through exclusion and exaggeration of difference, mass media promotes inequality and reinforces the harmful biases and stereotypes perpetuated by white, male, corporate culture. While media has the potential to promote images of equality and allow for the authentic expression of identity, the reality is that it often perpetuates harmful norms and reinforces existing power structures. Further research is needed to understand the impact of media on our understanding of these complex issues and to promote more equitable representation in popular culture.
