Explore further the Opportunity Atlas that shows the social mobility of children based on their area of birth. As you explore the interactive maps, compare the relative mobility of children by class, race, and gender using the tool in the right hand corner. You may choose to look at the whole of the U.S. or you may “zoom” into a particular state or city. Use your new knowledge about intersectionality of income, race-ethnicity, and gender to write a brief (300-400 words) essay. In this essay, explain some of the basic findings of your exploration into social mobility on the Opportunity Atlas. Based on your readings and your viewing of the presentations, what structural and cultural explanations for these findings do you think are most relevant? Based on the knowledge you gained through the readings and presentations, what is one policy solution you think would help create greater opportunity for upward mobility across race-ethnic group, gender, and region?
