Too Tired? Too Anxious? Need More Time? We’ve got your back.
Based on the concepts presented in Writing Arguments, you will write a 1000-word essay that will analyze the rhetorical strategies (ethos, logos, pathos, kairos) used in one of the advertisements posted on Ecampus. This essay will also examine the audience of the advertisement. As an author, you will argue if the rhetorical strategies used in the advertisement are convincing to the intended audience.
1. Introduction with thesis and audience
2. Summary of advertisement, including Kairos
3. Use of logos with specific examples
4. Use of pathos with specific examples
5. Use of ethos with specific examples
6. Conclusion
Consider the following:
Develop a strong thesis for your paper. In your first paragraph, let your reader know what forms of
rhetoric the advertisement uses. Are these forms of rhetoric effective for the intended audience? Why
or why not?
Describe your advertisement as though your reader has never seen it. Discuss what text and images appear, what colors are used, etc. (WA Chapter 9).
Define rhetorical terms (ethos, logos, pathos, Kairos) for your reader. Explain where you received
these definitions. You must refer back to Writing Arguments and/or A Writer’s Reference.
Your goal is not to evaluate the product, it is to analyze the advertisement.
Try to limit the use of “I,” “you,” “we,” and “they.” While personal pronouns are useful in some cases, they also tend to limit your audience and make your writing seem less formal. Instead, be more specific in your writing.
Add a Works Cited page that includes Writing Arguments and your ad. This must be in MLA format.
We will discuss this in class.
