ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS:
Instructions
In this assignment you will complete two tasks explained below. This is not a group assignment.
In order to obtain IRB approval for their research projects, researchers conducting research with human participants are commonly required to document that they have completed Human Subjects training. Below is the link for the United States Office for Human Research Protection (OHRP)’s recently released Human Subjects training.
Task 1: Please complete your training as explained below.
https://www.hhs.gov/ohrp/education-and-outreach/online-education/human-research-protection-training/index.html
The training is entitled ” Human Research Protection Foundational Training”. There are four lessons you will be completing.
Lesson 1- When HHS Regulations Apply?
Lesson 2- What is Human Subjects Research?
Lesson 3- What are IRBs?
Lesson 4- IRB Review of Research
at the end of each lesson there will a certificate to receive. Please complete all 4 lessons by 11:59 pm on February 12th and submit all 4 of your certificates (i.e., 4 certificates, 1 per lesson).
Task 2: After you are done with the training, please answer the following questions in about 1 to two pages saved as a word document. Submit your word document to the assignment drop box on D2L by 11:59 pm February 12th.
Why do you think researchers are required to receive training in working with human participants?
Did you find any of the content provided in this training surprising? Why?
Briefly explain your overall reaction to the training.
Briefly explain how this training relates to the course material.
You can honestly just BS.
HOW TO WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT (EXAMPLE ESSAY / DRAFT)
Human subjects research is a crucial aspect of scientific discovery and innovation. It is a field that requires special attention, as the subjects involved in this research are human beings, and their welfare and rights must be protected. For this reason, researchers who conduct research with human participants are required to undergo Human Subjects training. The training is designed to educate researchers on the ethical and legal aspects of conducting research with human subjects and to ensure that their research complies with the regulations set forth by the United States Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP).
In this assignment, I completed the Human Research Protection Foundational Training, which was provided by OHRP. The training consisted of four lessons, each of which focused on different aspects of conducting research with human subjects. The lessons were entitled “When HHS Regulations Apply?”, “What is Human Subjects Research?”, “What are IRBs?” and “IRB Review of Research”. At the end of each lesson, I received a certificate to acknowledge my completion of the lesson.
One of the reasons that researchers are required to receive training in working with human participants is to ensure that they are aware of the ethical and legal requirements of conducting research with human subjects. The training provided by OHRP helps researchers to understand the importance of obtaining informed consent from participants, protecting the confidentiality of their information, and ensuring that their rights are not violated during the research process. By undergoing this training, researchers can be confident that they are conducting their research in a responsible and ethical manner.
I found some of the content provided in this training surprising, particularly in the lesson on IRBs. I was not aware that IRBs play such a crucial role in the research process, and I was surprised to learn about the extensive review process that research projects must go through before they can be approved. However, I now understand the importance of this process in protecting the welfare of human subjects and ensuring that research is conducted in a responsible manner.
Overall, my reaction to the training was positive. I found the lessons to be well-structured and easy to understand, and I appreciated the emphasis on ethical and legal considerations in conducting research with human subjects. The training provided me with a good understanding of the regulations and requirements involved in this field, and I now feel more confident in conducting research with human subjects.
Finally, I would like to mention that this training relates to the course material in several ways. Firstly, it provides an overview of the regulations and requirements for conducting research with human subjects, which is a crucial aspect of many of the topics covered in the course. Secondly, it emphasizes the importance of ethical and responsible conduct in research, which is a theme that is discussed throughout the course. By completing this training, I have gained a deeper understanding of these important topics and I believe that it will benefit me in my future studies and research endeavors.
